This is the piece I would have never wanted to add to my press review, since it means that journalists are not allowed to seek for transparency regarding Julian Assange's case. I am starting to think that only historians will really do it. On September 12, RSF held its Press Freedom Award ceremony in #Berlin, where three outstanding journalists and bloggers were honored for their dedication to journalism in the face of adversity. - Congratulations to Saudi journalist Eman al Nafjan, who received RSF's Prize for Courage, Vietnamese journalist and blogger Pham Doan Trang, who received RSF's Prize for Impact, and Maltese journalist Caroline Muscat who received RSF's Prize for Independence. - “Every year, award-winners are unable to attend because the leaders of their countries prevent them,” RSF Secretary-General Christophe Deloire said. "These journalists, who should be honored in their countries, are denied the freedom to travel and often their freedom, period. But their commitment transcends borders without the dictators being able to do anything to prevent it.” - #pressfreedom
Guess who made it to the regional newspaper today? We did!😊😊 Only by God's grace!🙏🏻😊 They put a story of the visit that we(summer school students) had at the Badische Zeitung newspaper this week😊 During the visit, we raised important questions about press freedom as well as media and governance. We were marvelled by the independence that journalists enjoy here😊 The summer school that I am attending is on "Contested Governance ". #PressFreedom #ContestedGovernance #SummerSchool

#funfactfridayPress Laws or Mass Media Laws have been present in India since the late 18th Century and has been evolving, to the present situation where 13 press laws are in use. Some of the laws are The Press (Objectionable Matters) Act, 1951 The Newspaper (Prices and Pages) Act, 1956 The Working Journalists and other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1955 Press Council Act, 1978 #indianpress#pressfreedom#presslaws

What an eventful and fruitful week in Sydney having lunch with some prestigious journalists and people making a real difference. Discussions concerning the profession of journalism, press freedom, fake news, social media, and collaborations to improve and solve world issues, all were covered and more. Main take always: ✔️Your social media news feed is NOT news (eventhough it’s from news outlets) ✔️ Do your homework, research and question what you watch, see, and hear ✔️ An influencer, or random person on your social media is NOT a journalist ✔️Journalists are there to hold those in power and government accountable for public interest ✔️As for the future of journalism - it needs to move where the audience moves, in other words fish where the fish are 🐟 Thank you to Affinity for the amazing lunch, talk, and fundraising dinner. #futureofjournalism#pressfreedom#pressfreedom#austrlianmedia#publicrelations #praustralia#journalisminthedigitalage#fakenewsmedia#whatsnews#worklunches#affinityinterculturalfoundation#thankyouall#collaborationgroup#collaborationproject#sydneylunch
Under 'CINEPHILIA' we write about movies and documentaries related to journalism. “Journalism is the only profession explicitly protected by the US constitution, because journalists are supposed to be the check and balance on government. We’re supposed to be holding those in power accountable. We’re not supposed to be their megaphone. That’s what the corporate media have become.”- Amy Goodman Media, like every other industry has been influenced by corporates and has consistently adopted new business models. The growth of corporate culture has led to the increase of bigoted and biased media outlets. Some experts believe that media has never been more obedient to corporate and political forces as it is today. Freedom and the independence of journalists has been shackled and suppressed. These two documentaries are based on the impact of corporate media and the effects of big money on journalism. ‘Nobody Speak: Trials of the free press’ is an American documentary film that released in the year 2017. The documentary film was based on the trial between Hulk Hogan and Gawker Media that pitted privacy rights against freedom of the press, and raised important questions about how big money can silence media. The film examines the perils and duties of the free press in an age of inequality. ‘Shadows of Liberty’ is a British documentary film (2012) that examines the impact of new media monopoly by corporations in America versus the public battle for truth and democracy. It features interviews with a number of eminent journalists, activists and academics. Media houses and journalists across the world are going through tumultuous times where they are forced to battle the powerful to reclaim their suppressed voices. Journalists will have to uphold the finest of journalistic ethics, practice objective and constructive journalism for a better future. “The strokes of the pen need deliberation as much as the sword needs swiftness."- Julia Ward Howe For updates follow #coalescemediascape2019 . . . #review#documentary#corporatemedia#freepress#pressfreedom#freespeechjournalismdocumentaries #mediatrials #videography#coalesce#journalism#mediaevent#mediascape2019
It’s been an extremely busy - too busy - past 12 months for our Voice of the First Amendment Task Force. The Task Force has responded to #FirstAmendmentthreats in 36 states and federally on behalf of members across the country.
Two hundred inmates in Ward 5 of Gharchak Prison for women in the Iranian city of Varamin have sent an open letter to the head of the State Prisons Organization in Tehran Province protesting the prison’s inhumane living conditions. “Most of us…cannot afford to meet our basic needs such as food, drinking water, clothes and sanitary products,” said the August 17, 2019, Persian-language letter translated by the Center for Human Rights in Iran. “Don’t we prisoners have basic rights?” The letter noted that the signatories had begun refusing their lunch portions to protest the prison’s lack of accessible drinking water, inedible meals, insufficient sanitation and hygiene services, and unaffordable commissary items. The State Prisons Organization is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of prisoners and reports to the judiciary, but its chief Heshmatollah Hayatolgheyb refused to meet with the prisoners when he “inspected” the facility a month earlier, they noted in their letter. “Do we not deserve proper treatment, peace and protection by the authorities?” wrote the prisoners. “These problems are invisible pressures that have forced some of our fellow inmates to beat themselves, consume fistfuls of pills to calm their minds, and work for others to make money… Every day we repeat this question: How are we going to afford to stay alive?” Interviews conducted by CHRI have revealed that Gharchak prisoners are also being denied proper medical services and face violence perpetrated by prison authorities as well as other inmates.⠀ ⠀ #Iran#IranProtests#UN#CivilRights#FreeSpeech#PressFreedom#OpenLetter#MessageinaBottle#JournalismIsNotaCrime#Tehran#UnitedNations#WomensRights#Gharchak#IranElection#Amnesty#PoliticalPrisoner#PrisonerRights#Tehran#Rouhani#Khamenei
